Sponsoring a child at the School

For a moment, just close your eyes and imagine a child's life in the poorest districts of Mombasa! Living in a one-room shack, no running water, little food, no work for their parent(s), little chance of an education and not much of a future. And then, because of Aids, there are the orphans, who are either living with aunts, uncles or neighbours or, in the worst case scenario, on the streets!

Can we, as a Charity, make a difference?

With your help we certainly can and have been doing for the past five years! The Mwokoeni Children's Centre and School is unique in that it caters for children from very poor families and takes those without any family at all under its wing. None of them are able to meet the cost of their school fees, let alone the cost of school uniform and the necessary textbooks.

And this is where we come in!

At the present time, around a quarter of the 480 pupils are being sponsored by Friends of the Mwokoeni Children's Charity, and we are anxious to increase this sponsorship to ensure that these bright, polite, loving and dedicated young children are given a good education so that they have a chance to improve their life. They so badly want to learn; they are hungry for knowledge; grateful for every opportunity given; and produce amazing results when given the chance.

What would the cost be to you if you were interested in helping?

Well, for as little as £10 per month (£120 per year by direct debit) one child can be sponsored for a whole year, and this money goes towards paying the teachers' salaries to ensure regular and sustained education is maintained. Some of our sponsors also pay extra (i.e. an additional £5 per month) towards textbooks and uniform.

What information would you get from us if you became a sponsor?

We will give you details of the child allotted to you, we will either post or e-mail you our regular Newsletters with up-to-date information, and will keep in touch with you on the progress of the child.

What makes our Charity special?

Well, for a start, you can be assured that every penny of your sponsorship money goes into a Restricted Funds Account and can only be used to educate the children in the school. As a Charity, we fundraise separately for the other expenditures in the school, such as buildings, medical supplies and our food programme.

What is our long-term vision?

  • To obtain sponsorship for every child at the Mwokoeni School.
  • To follow through with longer-term education at boarding schools.
  • To eventually be able to have a custom-built safe centre with boarding facilities
  • To give each child the best chance possible and show them that everyone matters!
